Why divorce rate in Turkey is rising

ISTANBUL, (Xinhua) -- Domestic violence, adultery, unhappy sex life and financial troubles are among the major factors that lead to increasing cases of divorce in Turkey, a local family lawyer says.

Turkey's divorce rate jumped by 14 per cent over the past 10 years, reaching 1.6 per 1,000 by the end of 2012, according to official statistics.
Turkish Statistical Institute says in a report that Turkey's marriage rate and divorce rate in 2012 is 1.9 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, noting that the divorce rate is much higher.
A total of 603,751 people got married in 2012, while 123,325 were divorced.
However, divorce rate in Turkey is still significantly lower than that in Europe, reflecting stronger family ties in its social structure.
“Domestic violence, adultery, unhappy sex life and financial troubles are among the major factors that lead to divorce,” Cengiz Hortoglu, who specializes in divorce cases, told Xinhua.
